STUDENTS GET A NEW APP TO HELP STOP SEXUAL ASSAULTS ON CAMPUS

Duke University brings Men Can Stop Rape’s U ASK app to campus to help students to prevent sexual assaults, connect victims to support and create allies for survivors

WHAT: This April, which is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Duke University is launching a new app to help students prevent sexual assaults. The app, U ASK Duke, (University Assault. Services. Knowledge.) is a comprehensive mobile app that brings to one place all the resources available at Duke University for victims of sexual assault and dating violence.

The app also enables users to send preprogrammed messages like, “I feel unsafe, can you come get me?” Users also can request a free ride to the hospital in the case of an emergency, and select buttons that contact emergency personnel on and off campus.

The app was created to take the guess work out of helping a friend who is victimized, to normalize conversations about sexual assault, and to foster environments where individuals are proactive about staying safe and supporting friends.

“Duke has a longstanding commitment to the safety and well-being of our students, and we have a wide range of programs, information and support services available across campus,” said Howard Kallem, Duke’s Director of Title IX Compliance. “With the U ASK Duke app, victims, bystanders and allies can get to those resources faster and more directly than ever.”

Created by the national violence prevention organization Men Can Stop Rape and by Duke Women’s Center, UASK Duke can be downloaded for free.

The ASK App began in Washington, D.C., (ASK DC) as a comprehensive sexual assault resource for the city, created by Men Can Stop Rape with support from the DC Office of Victim Services and Justice Grants, in 2012. It has since been adopted by all eight universities in DC and a number of other communities across the country.

Any university, city or state can bring a customized version of the groundbreaking ASK app to their community by contacting This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. We are excited to launch this year's 30 Days of Strength in order to raise awareness that sexual assault is both a women’s and a men’s issue.

This year, we’re taking social media by storm and completing our 30 Days of Strength online as well as in schools. We’ll be using the hashtag ‪#‎30DaysOfStrength‬, and encourage you to do the same!
