New Teen Talk Show Counter Stories Acknowledges Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Washington, DC – The youth members of the Men of Strength (MOST) Club and WISE (Women Inspiring Strength and Empowerment) Club recently collaborated to challenge the norms of masculinity and discuss what is needed to create healthy relationships among their peers via a new teen talk show entitled “Counter Stories.” The project, a Community Strength Project facilitated by the nonprofit, Men Can Stop Rape, and designed by the youth, is airing now on DCTV in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

During this special first episode, running throughout October on DCTV’s Flagship channel, the teens present real life experiences, talk through solutions and encourage facing challenges with nonviolent strength.

“Love is blind in a lot of cases,” co-host Noya explains about teen domestic abuse. “…Roughly 1.5 million high school boys and girls in the U.S. admit to being intentionally hit or physically harmed in the last year by someone they are in a relationship with.”

For the series, the young men and women make all the thematic decisions, empowering them to explore the images, sounds, and narratives of DC through their own artistic lenses and allowing them to work side by side with professional artists and filmmakers to become scriptwriters, film editors, videographers, set designers, graphic artists, wardrobe designers, photographers, and cinematographers in their own right. An accompanying series of webisodes is also being produced, allowing the youth to delve into the intersectionality of sexism, race and the creative economy, and its effects on healthy friendships.
