HONOREES AT OUR 7TH ANNUAL FREDERICK DOUGLASS MEN OF STRENGTH AWARDS YOUTH HONOREE, NATHANIEL COLE
Nate giving his acceptance speech Bio from event program:
YOUTH HONOREE, NATHANIEL COLE, Student Government President, School Without Walls Senior Public High School, Men of Strength Club Member. Nate Cole shatters all our stereotypical assumptions of youth as self-centered and indifferent. Not only does he have the talents, insights, and ability to accomplish his life goals, but more importantly, he is dedicated and committed to making a difference in the lives of young Washingtonians. Nate says, “I'm committed to public service because I love to see changes for the positive.” As a graduating senior, an honor roll student, and president of the student body at School Without Walls Public Senior High School, Nate serves as an important role model for the entire student body, including members of the school's Men of Strength Club. But his commitment to others extends well beyond the boundaries of his school. Nate has served as the student representative to the DC Public School Board of Education, as an intern for The World Bank Group, Legal Africa, where he researched and prepared a presentation on violence affecting youth in DC and Africa, and as a volunteer at My Sister's Place, a domestic violence shelter in Washington, DC. Currently, Nate is chair of the DC Youth Advisory Council, youth mayor of the YMCA, an intern at the Fannie Mae Foundation, and the DC Citywide Student Government president. Clearly, this is a young man who has done more at 18 to improve the lives of his peers than most adults. Nate's long list of accomplishments make apparent his commitment to a Washington, DC equitable for all and identify him as an exceptional man of strength.

WASHINGTON, DC HONOREE, JOHN EUILL John speaking at the podium Bio from event program:
WASHINGTON, DC HONOREE, JOHN W. EUILL, II, Experience Corps Mentor. Birney Elementary School. For years now there has been public outcry claiming boys need better role models and more guidance from adult men. John Euill provides both. During his 34 years of service with the United States Capitol Police, John received many awards and citations for his dedication, including becoming the First Senior Officer to receive the #1 Presidential Inaugural Badge. Upon his retirement in February 2001, John was recruited by the Experience Corps, an innovative and award-winning national service program for older Americans, to become a mentor at Birney Elementary School in Southeast DC, one of the most violent parts of the city. John says, “I've always wanted to help and assist people whenever and wherever I could.” Once a week, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., he meets one-on-one with fifth and sixth grade boys, acting as a much-needed role model, encouraging them to improve their schoolwork and attendance, change at-risk behaviors, develop healthy outside interests, and look at a variety of career possibilities. John takes a firm but compassionate approach with the boys, and they respond with warmth and respect. Over the last four years he has had many successes, keeping youngsters in school and out of trouble, and helping them become better students. In addition, John initiated a parent program at the elementary school, which strives to involve parents and families with the boys' progress. Parent involvement has been gratifyingly high. John defines strength as “having the power and endurance to resist negative forces,” a definition that characterizes his inspirational role for boys in Southeast DC developing a healthier understanding of what it means to be a Man of Strength NATIONAL HONOREE, JOE EHRMANN
Jeffrey Marx, author of SEASON OF LIFE about Joe Ehrmann, presents the Award to Joe Joe giving his acceptance speech Bio from the event program: NATIONAL HONOREE, JOE EHRMANN, President, Building Men for Others. A former professional football player who claims that strength is all about nurturing? Defensive high school coach and Ex-Baltimore Colts all-pro lineman, Joe Ehrmann, understands the tough guy culture of sports – and the need to transform it. In Parade Magazine, Pulitzer Prize winner Jeffrey Marx calls Joe “the most important coach in America.” The coaching mantra – empathy, integrity, and loving affirmation – of Joe's program, Building Men for Others, has electrified the athletic world. Joe himself stands as an exemplary model of a man committed to others. Since his retirement from professional football, he has spent almost 20 years addressing poverty, racism and family disintegration in Baltimore city. He is the co-founder of Baltimore's Ronald McDonald House, the founder of The Door, an inner-city, community-based center, and was selected by the Baltimore Business Journal as the Renaissance Person of the 1990's for his dedication and commitment to Baltimore City's betterment. But all of this work led Joe to realize that “you can't fix poverty and racism until you also find ways to get at the issue of masculinity,” which explains why he created Building Men for Others, the subject of Jeffrey Marx's New York Times bestseller, Season of Life: A Football Star, a Boy, a Journey to Manhood, and the guiding force for Baltimore's perennial high school gridiron power, the Gilman Greyhounds. Building Men for Others is based on the following simple but powerful principles: build and value relationships; allow yourself to love and be loved; lead courageously and enact justice on behalf of others; learn the importance of serving others; and develop a cause beyond yourself. Joe and head coach, Biff Poggi, remind their players daily to ask others: “What can I do for you?” Joe, Biff, and the Gilman Greyhounds not only are building better athletes, they are building better men, and his transformative vision of what it means to be a competitor and a Man of Strength is why we honor Joe today.
"He's a lot of things to a lot of people," says Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. about Joe Ehrmann. "He's really an opinion leader. And what I love about Joe – it's not just the messages. It's the messenger. He's a very unique man. Gentle. Principled. Committed. And effective."
