MCSR Meets with Egyptian National Council for Women
This week Men Can Stop Rape met with members from the Egyptian National Council for Women, whose mandate includes proposing and implementing policy in support of the development and empowerment of women in Egypt.
Members of the council include Secretary General Dr. Farkhonda Hassan (bottom center), members of the Egyptian Parliament, and representatives of Egypt’s NGO community, including the Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights. Other members present included a senior writer and editor for the Egyptian daily newspaper Al-Ahram and an officer from the State Security Department who works to end human trafficking.
MCSR and the Council discussed engaging men in primary prevention of sexual assault, domestic violence and sexual harassment in different cultural contexts, as well as how media can be pro-actively used to change social norms. We also talked specifically about MCSR’s work with the US Department of Defense, and a recent campaign against street harassment being implemented in Egypt.
This is MCSR’s third consultation with international visitors arranged by the US State Department. Previous delegations included governmental and NGO representatives from Vietnam and Mozambique.
